Africa has the world’s youngest population and 65 percent of its uncultivated arable land however many young Africans are leaving rural areas, migrating to improve their livelihood and escape poverty and food insecurity.
Diaspora engagement in agriculture and rural development still encounters many challenges ranging from difficulties to channel contributions and access remote rural to a lack of information on funding opportunities or local administrative requirements. However, with adequate support for African diaspora knowledge, skills and resources, the potential for diaspora-led rural development and agribusiness can be realised and result in jobs and opportunities creation for young people in rural areas.
Jointly organised by ADEPT and FAO, this webinar will provide participants with an overview of FAO’s work in the area of migration, including examples from past and on-going projects in Africa, with a focus on the importance of engaging diaspora in agriculture and rural development. A discussion will follow on challenges and opportunities for the African diaspora to participate in agribusiness and create jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities for young people on the continent.
